In the July 24, 2023, edition of The Hill Times, a national Canadian political news newspaper and daily news website, Andrew McLaughlin, Major Drilling Vice President of Legal Affairs and General Counsel, wrote an opinion editorial focusing on staying relevant in the global energy transition. He cautions that with upcoming Canadian government plans to expedite critical minerals permits, it is imperative that the country position itself to lead out in the global green energy transition or run the risk of getting bogged down by red tape, and missing the boat all together. “Canada possesses a wealth of mineral reserves necessary for the green energy transition including cobalt, graphite, nickel and lithium,” writes McLaughlin. “Moreover, we [Canada] have a long history of global leadership in mining and extensive industry expertise.”

This is where the government’s stated goal of fast-tracking critical mineral projects risks getting tripped up – with silos between government departments and overlapping jurisdictions having a long track record of impeding progress and coordination. We should be taking notes from countries like Australia, with its Major Projects Facilitation Agency, who are deliberately adopting frameworks and approaches necessary to minimize this risk.”
“Canada needs a shared vision that aligns all sectors of society and identifies their potential roles in the energy transition,” McLaughlin states. “We must develop actionable plans and elevate sustainable mining to the status of a national strategic industry, fostering joint engagement between the public and private sectors, as we collectively and vigorously pursue this vision.”
